The skin care routine for dry skin that will change your life
Ok, maybe it won’t change your life, but it will dramatically improve it! Because dealing with dry skin can be a real pain in the, well, skin. Some of us experience dry skin seasonally, while others deal with it all the time. Dry skin can mean your face feels a little tight, maybe you have some dry patches, or perhaps you’re itchy and red all over. No matter where you fall on the spectrum, here are some tips for a skin care routine for dry skin that are sure to offer you some relief and feel less like a crocodile!
Why so dry?
While annoying and a bit uncomfortable, mild dry skin is typically not very serious and you can usually do something about it. Dry skin is typically caused by environmental factors, like dry weather, heat (like a wood-burning stove or space heater), hot baths and showers, or harsh soaps and lotions.
If you are experiencing frequent or severe dry skin — like if your skin is so itchy you can’t sleep, or if the dryness won’t go away despite your best efforts, or if the dryness is causing open sores — you should undoubtedly go see a dermatologist.
The skin care routine for dry skin that will dramatically improve your life
First and foremost, if you have dry skin, drink more water. Really so many of our day to day ailments could be improved by drinking more water.
Next, let’s talk about the products you’re using on your skin. Skin care products and the ingredients in them can have major impacts on your skin’s moisture level. For a really solid skin care routine for dry skin, use natural emollients like lanolin, shea butter, or cocoa butter based moisturizers, preferably without water in the formula. Water in products needs to be accompanied with preservatives like alcohol or synthetics that can ultimately dry out your skin. In fact, when choosing between lotions or body butters for all-over moisturizing, go for the butters because they don’t contain water or preservatives.
Also, avoid sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). It’s a synthetic ingredient commonly used in soaps to make them more bubbly and foamy. However, SLS is known to cause all sorts of discomfort from skin and eye irritations and headaches to dry skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis.
